Minutes after saying that the preliminary agreement with Iran “is over” following Tehran’s attacks on tankers in Hormuz, Trump says he is open to negotiations continuing if that is preferred by “negotiators.”
“Now, I’ll let our wonderful negotiators keep talking if they want, but I don’t see it. I don’t like these people,” Trump says. It’s unclear if he’s referring only to the US negotiating team, led by US Vice President JD Vance along with top Trump aides Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, or to regional mediators such as Qatar, Pakistan, and Turkey, as well.
Trump accuses Iran of killing “54,000 people as of now,” referring to Iranian demonstrators “that were protesting” against the regime.
He says anti-government Iranians haven’t succeeded in toppling the Islamic Republic because they remain unarmed: “You know, when people say, ‘How come they haven’t taken over? They can’t take over because they’re dead. They killed them. Nobody’s going to take over. They have no guns, and the other side has machine guns, and they’re killing them. The press doesn’t report it, but they’re bad people, and frankly, I don’t want to waste my time with them.”
